In German Das means The and Der also means The ??? plz explain Why

Both Das and Der mean "The" and both are definite articles in the nominative case. But the difference between these two lies in their use. They are used depending upon the gender of the noun. Der is the masculine article while Das is the neutral article. 

Example - 
Der Junge spielt mit einem Ball.

                 D
as Pferd ist im Stall.
