In the story “Hearts and Hands” Mr. Easton abruptly leaves Ms. Fairchild alone in the coach to take the convict (who is the real marshall) for a smoke.

The author O’Henry is a champion storyteller and has a way of making a simple situation become an interesting one with a surprise twist. Here too, Mr. Easton has to cut short his conversation with his old friend Ms. Fairchild, because the convict is desperate for a smoke. For that the convict needs to be taken to the smoker room, and Mr.Easton has to go along because they are both handcuffed together.

However, the truth is that Mr. Easton is actually the convict while the ‘glum-faced man’ is the real convict. So, the truth is that the marshall who was pretending to be a convict was doing so only to save Mr. Easton’s image in front of his friend Ms. Fairchild. The real marshall pretended to need a smoke because he had to take Mr.Easton along. So, when he asked for a smoke, Mr.Easton, who was the real convict, could not ignore the real marshall and got up abruptly.
