The type of cell division involved in this growth is Meiosis. Meiotic cell division involves reproduction where two haploid gametes fuse to form a diploid gamete. Sporophytic phase is a multicellular  stage of life cycle of a plant where the haploid male and female gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote.

A sporophyte  is the diploid multicellular stage in the life cycle of a plant or alga. It develops from the zygote produced when a haploid egg cell is fertilized by a haploid sperm and each sporophyte cell therefore has a double set of chromosomes, one set from each paren
