The French society was divided into 3 estates-
1st estate - Clergy
2nd estate -Nobility
3rd estate
★ big businessmen,merchants,court officials ,lawyers
★ peasants and artisans
★ small peasants ,landless labour,servants
The 1st estate consisted of the clergy i.e persons invested with special functions in the church.About 60% of the land was owned by nobles.the Church and rich members of the 3rd estate. The members of the 1st two estates enjoyed certain priviledges by birth. The most important was exemption from paying taxes to the state.
