Summands
If a number is expressed as a sum of natural numbers, then the later are called summands. E.g., 3 = 1 + 2.
To find: In how many ways, 6 can be positioned into ordered summands?
Solution:
- 6 = 1 + 5
- 6 = 2 + 4
- 6 = 3 + 3
Above we see that 6 can be positioned into three ordered summands with the help of the natural number pairs (1, 5), (2, 4) and (3, 3).
Note: We could take pairs (4, 2) and (5, 1), but since addition is commutative, the other pairs (2, 4) and (1, 5) only are taken into count.
