If you are measuring the distance between 2 planets, only a couple of methods are actually practical. You can do a direct measure by comparing the distance to a known physical object such as a ruler. You can also measure distance if you can time how long something of know speed takes to travel that distance. This can be demonstrated by watching for a lightening flash and counting how long it takes before you hear the thunder. Knowing the speed of light and the speed of sound, you can figure the distance between you and the storm. You can also use other properties of the object. For example, you can figure out how long a certain diameter wire is by measuring its resistance.

There are many ways to measure, but none are the best for all situations.
