The earth takes approximately "24 hours for rotation and 365 days and 6 hours" to complete one revolution around the sun.

There are "two types of motions" that are performed by Earth: "Rotation and Revolution". When earth moves on its own axis then this motion of earth is called "rotation of earth on its axis. It takes exactly 23 hours 59 mins and 4 secs for earth to complete one rotation on its axis which for convenience is taken to he 24 hours. The rotation of earth is responsible for causing "day and night".

When earth moves around sun on its elliptical path then it is called  "revolution of earth" around sun. It takes earth about "365 days and 6 hours" to complete one revolution around sun or one year to complete it. These 6 hours after four years is added as one extra day in month of February and is called "leap year". The revolution of earth around sun is response for change in seasons on earth.
