Inspiration takes place when the intra-pulmonary pressure ( pressure within the lung) is less than the atmospheric pressure. The ribs are raised and diaphragm contracted in the process of inspiration which increased the volume of the thoracic chamber.

Expiration takes place when the intra-pulmonary pressure is higher than atmospheric pressure. in the process of expiration, ribs returned back to their original position and diaphragm relaxed and arched upward.
