Answer:

Yes, it is true that in many places in India, females are unwanted and are considered as a burden upon a family. This mentality results in female infanticide and abandoning of female newborn babies. However, the reason behind this mentality is one that doesn't sit right with the ways of the world today.

The biggest reason to this crisis is marriage. In most villages, a girl child simply carries the burden of marriage upon the family. Once of age, she has to get married or the reputation of the entire family is next to nothing. Also, for the marriage the girl's family has to pay a certain amount of money, or anything else the family of the groom asks for, in a now banned ritual known as Dahej.

So basically, a girl child only means wastage of money for the family. Another reason as to why a girl child is unwelcome is the fact that the family name does not get passed down. In India, passing down of the family name is a big thing, and also according to Orthodox mentality boys are the dominant people who earn for the entire family, whereas a girl is required to cook, clean, give birth and then look after the house and children.

All these factors contribute to female infanticide, an extremely unfortunate thing, but one that can only be stopped by the future generations of India.
