In India, it is has always been the custom to look after the aged. The parents in old age continued to live with their children and grand-children. The Joint family system is breaking up now. Small flats cannot accommodate everybody. Parents are confined to some remote corner or are shared round the year with other members of the family. The cost of living is steadily going up. Doctors are expensive and so are special foods the old need. The problem of loneliness is frightening.
1. Traditionally what has been the attitude towards the aged in India?
2. How does the rising cost of living affect the life of the aged?
