The first Metro Rail service was inaugurated in Kolkata on October 24, 1984. Kolkata Metro is the only metro in the country to be controlled by Indian Railways.
Its first service used to run between Netaji Bhawan (Bhawanipore) and Esplanade.
On 29 December 2010, Metro Railway, Kolkata, became the 17th zone of the Indian Railways, completely owned and funded by the Ministry of Railways.
The idea was first mooted in 1919 by the then colonial rulers, but it did not see the light of the day. Later, B C Roy, the first CM of West Bengal state, after independence, did give it a thought in 1950s, but nothing much happened till the 1970s.
However, the idea was once again taken up in 1972 and foundation stone of the Kolkata Metro project was laid by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 29 December 1972, and construction work started in the year 1973–74.
While it was a difficult task for the Indian Railways, since they had not much funds, did not have knowledge or experience of such work, there was lack of expertise and technology, but the construction work went on for nearly a decade or more.
Imagine that the roads and streets of the main Kolkata city were barricaded and open digging went on in places like Chandni Chowk, Esplanade, Central Avenue, Bowbazar and such places.
In those days, we had only Indian Airlines, and its ticket booking office was located at Central, and it used to be a harrowing experience to visit that place in those days.
Even then, despite all the hurdles, services began on 24 October 1984, with the commissioning of a partial commercial service covering a distance of 3.40 km with 5 stations served between Esplanade and Bhawanipore (now Netaji Bhawan)
The service was quickly followed by commuter services on another 2.15 km stretch in the north between Dum Dum and Belgachhia on 12 November 1984. The commuter service was extended to Tollygunge on 29 April 1986, covering a further distance of 4.24 km, making the service available over a distance of 9.79 km and covering 11 stations. Kolkata Metro Rail is the only metro rail which is a part of the Indian Railways.
