While changing the narration some changes also take place in the verb pattern, pronouns and some other changes to adjust with the time and distance.
In the same way, if the need arises, we can change the word "sorry' to (apologise or regret).
Examples -
He said, " I am sorry." ( He said that he was sorry.)
“I’m sorry,” said Ria. ( Ria apologised.)
