If the ending end is connected to the commutator segment that is behind the previous one, then that is retrogressive winding. The image below explains the theory on three commutator segments using a brown coloured loop.

What is the condition of retrogressive winding?

The coil side displacement of the front-end connection is called the front-pitch. The coil side displacement of the back-end connection is called the back-pitch. The direction in which the winding progresses depends upon which is more, Yb or Yf.
