In lac operon lactose acts as inducer.

Extra Information :-

  • Lactose is the substrate for the enzyme beta-galactosidase.

  • Lactose regulates the switching on and off of the operon.

  • In absence of a preferred carbon source such as glucose, if lactose is provided in the medium of growth of the bacteria, the lactose gets transported into the cells through the action of permease.

  • A very low level of expression of lac operon is needed to be present in the cell at all times to allow the entry of lactose into the cells.
