in lenses, If magnification is positive, the image will be virtual and erect If magnification is negative, the image will be real and inverted. but isnt this the opposite? as virtual images are formed on the left so it should be negative and as the real images are formed on the right so it should be positive right?

Not actually
Because the virtual images formed are large in size they cannot be taken on the screen how ever the direction doesn't matter much in the case of concave lens the virtual image is on the same side as that of the object so in case of lens it doesn't matter like mirror
