"In life, people who easily trust others are sometimes made to look foolish. One should not be too trusting". Describe how Oliver Lutkins made a fool of the young lawyer.
Answers
Answer:
Oliver Lutkins was a seasoned crook and was able to tactfully dupe the young lawyer.
The young lawyer being extremely gullible believed Oliver when he said his name was Bill Magnuson and took him into his confidence, telling him why he had come to New Mullion. Once Oliver found out he was being searched for, he carefully stringed up a series of events that made the lawyer believe that Oliver was not in town. Bill took the lawyer to all the places Oliver was known to be, from Fritz's shop, to Gustaff and Gray's barber shop and lastly to Oliver's mother's house but he was nowhere to be found.
From this we learn that we should never trust anybody without any form of conformation about their identity.
The lawyer could have easily avoided this situation by either cross checking with other people about Bill's identity or he could've done his homework by carrying a picture of Oliver with him to make it easier on himself.

Answer:
Lutkins impressed the lawyer with his friendly manner; led the lawyer to think that the people of the town were trustworthy. — claimed to know most of the places where Lutkins could be found — befooled the lawyer — charged high price for the hack and food — alerted Fritz, friends and mother not to reveal his identity to the lawyer — even went to the railway station to see him off — on his second visit the lawyer learnt that the hack driver himself was Lutkins — no one should be too trusting Detailed Answer : The lawyer used to work as an apprentice with a law firm. He had to serve summons on witnesses as a part of his job. He was sent to New Mullion to serve summons on Oliver Lutkins, a prime witness in a law case. When he reached the town and was making enquiries about Lutkins, he met a hack driver who was in fact Lutkins and took him to many places like Beincke’s, Gustaff ’s barber shop, Gray’s barber shop, poolroom and his mother’s farmyard. At every place they went in, (first and then when the lawyer went) people said that he had not come there or just missed him by five minutes. The hack driver told the lawyer that Lutkins owed him money also and thus he appeared a genuine and helpful person to the lawyer. Thus Lutkins, very cleverly, fooled the lawyer and he (the lawyer) was not able to complete his work that day.Read more on Sarthaks.com - https://www.sarthaks.com/213652/life-people-who-easily-trust-others-are-sometimes-made-look-foolish-one-should-not-trusting
