Neurotic needs, according to Karen Horney, were broadly classified into three - as the need to ‘move towards people’, ‘moving against people’ and ‘moving away from people’.

Under the first were the need for affection, the need for a partner and the need to get control. Under the second, came the need to exploit, to be recognized and admired socially, to achieve and be independent. Under the third, was the need for perfection and to live life within confined borders.

Karen Horney (1885 – 1952) was a German psychoanalyst, who did not agree with some of Sigmund Freud’s views and theories, like the Theory of Sexuality and Orientation of Psychoanalysis.
