The first volume of the autobiography of Gabriel García Márquez is called Living to Tell the Tale”. It was first published in the Spanish language in 2002.

García Márquez’s memoir is written against the backdrop of political, cultural,  and literary events in Colombia,.The events span three decades and they describe the landscape of the region between the 1920s -1950’s.  The memoir is phenomenal in bringing the life of the most cherished literary figures in Colombia. However, it received criticism for being too long and for expository paragraphs.

Living to Tell the Tale traces the story of García Márquez' life from  his birth Aracataca.

The author takes his mother on a journey in which they aim to sell the house he grew up in.

It also looks at his life during mid-1950s, when he was  experimenting with journalism to pay his bills and complete his initial  novel, “Leaf Storm”.

At the tail end of the book, he proposes to his wife. His family life, schooling,  and career are the central themes of the book.

The author declares that together with his mother, they are deserted like the family of a thief.

He asserts :

"Me siento como si yo fuera el ladrón" — "I feel like I am the Thief"
