In Madras Presidency, the widow re-marriage movement started under the leadership of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.
- He was the leading campaigner of this movement.
- To approve it, he sent a petition to the Legislative council but a counter-petition was there against it.
- This counter-petition was signed by Radhakanta Deb and the Dharma Sabha and had nearly four times more signatures than Vidyasagar's one.
Finally, Lord Canning passed this Act and it was drafted by Lord Dalhousie.
