Here's a quick trick for such questions! :

1. If the sign outside the bracket is positive, then the signs inside the brackets won't change.

For example in the example, 36 + (-25), the sign outside the bracket is plus, so the result after opening the brackets would be : 36 - 25.

The positive sign is removed and the sign inside the brackets remain.

Another example, 4 + ( 2-3) = 4+2-3 (here, the '2' written inside brackets has a positive sign, so it is written before it after opening the brackets)

or, 17 + (-14+1) = 17- 14 + 1

2. If the sign outside the brackets is negative, then all the signs inside the brackets would be reversed, i.e. + to - and - to +.

For example, 6 - ( - 2) = 6 + 2 (- is reversed to +)

OR, 19 - (2+4-3) = 19 - 2 - 4 + 3( again, signs are reversed.)

You can even remember this rule like.... '+' is a good one, so it let's others remain in their state (either negative(-) or positive (+)) whereas

'-' is a bad one, it forces everyone to change their sign.

  • Also, another trick, same signs + and different signs -.
  • Like, +(+ = +
  • -(- = +
  • +(- = -
  • -(+ = -
