Madan Mohan Malaviya, Annie Besant, Maharaja Rameshwar Singh of the Darbhanga Raj, Prabhu Narayan Singh, and Aditya Narayan Singh of the Narayan dynasty all contributed to the founding of the Banaras Hindu University, which was the idea of Malviya. To promote the study of classical Sanskrit writings, the Hindu College was founded in the year 1791. The Central Hindu College, established in 1898 by Annie Besant, a Theosophist and member of the Indian Home Rule League, was absorbed into the university. With the financial assistance of the kings of Dharbhanga Rameshwar Singh, Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, and Sunder Lal, the institution was founded by Madan Mohan Malaviya after Besant and her followers were sidelined. BHU is the largest residential university with nearly 30,000 students, 18,000 of whom live on campus.
