hindu society was decided on the basis of their caste. Caste is basically division according to the work they perform , e.g: farmer, king,warrior,ect.
so the division was as follows:
bhramins.
khsatriyas.
shudhras.
vaishyas.
the order being as the first one being the highest of regard.
