=    A good candidate perhaps surprisinly is the Arabs. Catholic church froze the scientific development, and even intentionally destroyed important works of Greek philosophers. Many works have been saved only because muslim scholars translated and studied their works. They also saved the knowledge of geography, and adapted Indian mathematics. This is why we use so called Arabic numbers, not Roman. The more important geopolitically was the expansion of muslim empire to northern Africa, Iberia, and the Balkans in addition to the Near East.
