the answer is= The traits were recessive.

Also, 1/4 of the F2 (2nd generation) plants in Mendel's experiments bred true as tall plants and 1/4 bred true as short plants.Another 1/4 of the F2 plants had S seeds which produced only S seeds when self-pollinated. This shows they were homozygous for S genes.
