Well it a very nice story written by william shakespeare (:
n the first scene,Shakespear opens with the merchant who gives title to the drama. Interest is quickened by showing him in a strange melancholy which is never explained.Shakespear's motive was dramatic proprietory,a foreboding of the dangers to come.Antonios character was also passive, may be because in the time that the drama was written passive characters earned much sentiment.

Antonio was in a melancholic mood because his ships were in the seas and his ships contains all his wealth. If his ships sink in the shallow seas then he would be left with nothing and he would become very poor as all his merchadise are in his ships out in the seas.
