This story is a clear example of how slavery affects not only the slaves but the slave masters too.
A perfect example is of Mrs. Auld who at the beginning of the story was very pious, kind, and soft hearted person. She not only made efforts in treating the slaves with kindness but also helped one of her slave Frederick Douglass learn to read.
But after some time, being influenced by the norms of the society and adapting to the ways her husband lived in. Mrs, Auld also started treating them harshly, same way like all others of that time did. Thus, soon her kind and soft attitude was changed to a ignorant, fierce and rageful one.
Therefore, this shows how the environment influences ones behaviour.
