chlorine gains electrons beacuse it has 7 valence electrons while sodium has only 1 valence electron so to make chlorine a stable element it will have to gain a electron in order to get 8 electrons in outer shell. So therefore chlorine gains electron in NaCl

here is the answer to your question
______________________________**
Chlorine gains an electron because it's electronic configuration is
ns2np5
or
2,8,7
here chlorine have to gain only one more electron
thus it's electronegativity is very high(halogens)
thus in Nacl chlorine gains one electron from sodium (since valency of sodium is 1)
