The calorific value can be determined using the heat balance. 

Heat given by the fuel is equal to the heat gained by the water.

LHS:Mass of fuel×calorific value.

RHS:mass if water×specific heat ×change in temperature.

Equate LHS and RHS to get the calorific value.
