The elk stands for the deer species, which is rare in the world. This belongs to the cervidae family of science and this is one of the largest mammal. In this story the elk is used as the grumpy card for the rarest species which was on the verge of extinction and hence it is used as the moral of hunting the species and using the species for the value of meat and leather and money. The hunting kills the particular community of elk in the story  and it registers the value of an animal.
