With the starboard side bashed open,every wave was sending water into the boat so the narrator had to cover the gaping holes with a canvas and secure the waterproof hatch. They spent the night pumping out water and on the morning of January 3, the pumps had the water level sufficiently under control to enable those on board to take rest in two hours' rotation after the whole night's vigil.
