Theodoric was travelling by rail when he felt the 'unwelcome' mouse moving on his flesh. He tried to shake it out, and even pinch it, but finally had to take his clothes off. So, he used the 'railway rug' as a curtain between him and his co-passenger.
The beauty of the story lies in Saki's use of humour and the twist at the end. The lady's expressions and reactions like ' soundly and securely asleep', 'unwinking wakefulness', the mouse being a member of the 'Alpine Club' and Theodoric's face blushing to the colour of a 'beetroot' and his movement 'almost quicker than a mouse' add humour to the story. The punchline comes at the end when the readers get to know that the lady is blind!
