In O.Henry's "The Gift of the Magi" Della cuts her hair despite her love for it because her love for Jim was much more than her love for the hair. She preferred her love for Jim more than the love for the materialistic things. For her love, she would sacrifice anything. She wanted to buy a chain for Jim's watch. In order to buy she was feeling sort of money. Although she had saved some money but a buy selling her long hair she got much money by which she could buy the chain for him.
