Water filters were not in use in olden days primarily because of the lack of mechanical development and absence of knowledge regarding sanitation and hygiene. Despite that, it is well known that most water was safe to drink from at that time.
In those days, waterbodies, especially rivers, were free of pollution unlike the manner in which they are today. They were not filled with unremovable toxins and chemicals, or inorganic materials that were never to be rid of.
Another reason the water could've been safe was through the lack or absence of humans, which meant the waterbody was unused and was not tampered with by humans and their unhygienic practices.
