In  olden  times,  how  was  a  magnet  placed  in  a  compass  ?

In olden times actually the needles of compass were magnetised and placed into compass which aligns with earth's magnetic field and the needle was magnetised temporarily as it was magnetised by lodestone so sailors take lodestone with them on boats to magnetise the needle.
