The gas 'X' and compound  'Y' are identified as Chlorine gas and Bleaching powder respectively.

  • The industrial manufacturing of sodium hydroxide uses sodium chloride and water as raw material.
  • When sodium chloride reacts with water it yields three products namely Sodium hydroxide, chlorine gas and hydrogen gas as shown in the following chemical equation:

2NaCl+2H_2O\rightarrow 2NaOH+Cl_2+H_2

  • Among the formed products, two are gases namely chlorine gas and hydrogen gas.
  • Compared to hydrogen gas, chlorine is highly reactive with dry slaked lime and leads to the production of a compound called bleaching powder which is used as bleaching agent.
  • The reaction involved is as shown:

Cl_2+Ca(OH)_2\rightarrow CaOCl_2+H_2O

  • Thus 'X' is identified as Chlorine gas, whereas 'Y' is identified as Bleaching powder.
