In humans and most vertebrates, the secondary oocyte proceeds as far as the metaphase stage of meiosis II. It then stops advancing any further and awaits the arrival of sperm for completion of meiosis II. But it does not wait for years. After 3-5 days, the secondary oocyte (if fertilization does not take place) degenerates and new ovarian follicle starts developing. This cycle is called menstrual cycle.
