In order to promote afforestation, quick growing plants such as eucalyptus were brought
from Australia and grown in different parts of India. It did give rise to a quick forest cover
but depleted the water table of the areas. Find out why.

Eucalyptus depletes the the nutrients and moisture reserves of the soil and inhibits the undergrowth due to allelopathic properties. Furthermore the decomposition of the dead plant parts is very slow which adversely affects the nutrient cycling. Owing to these adverse effects, Eucalyptus is often referred as " Ecological Terrorist".
