in order to protect the respiratory surface in humans the air passing through nostrils and nasal passage is filtered through the hairs present inside in nostrils,, in order to remove some sort of dust which intend to enter along with air and in nasal passage there is a mucus gland( not identify yet) which is verysticky to which the bacteria get stuck and thus help in preventing their passage to respiratory surface .so in this way respiratory surface gets protect
