◆ Reaction -

Benzene on ozonolysis gives glyoxal. This reaction takes place in 2 steps -

# Step I -

Benzene on treatment with ozone gives benzene triozonide. 3 O3 molecules are added over C6H6 in this reaction.

C6H6 + 3O3 --> C6H6O9

# Step II -

Benzene triozonide on further reaction with water gives glyoxal.

C6H6O9 + 3H2O --> 3CHO-CHO + 3H2O2
