In petroleum refining, the method of separation used is fractional distillation.

● Obtaining diesel, petrol & kerosene from petroleum -

  • Separation of different components of petroleum is done by fractional distillation.
  • Petroleum (crude oil) is heated with continuously increasing temperature.
  • Low boiling liquids change into vapor first and then condense.
  • Petrol boils at 150°C, kerosene at 200°C & diesel boils at 300°C & fuel oil at 370°C.
  • These are collected accordingly in separate vessels.
