that is because the prairies are huge farms and human/manual labour is very difficult as they need to plough,sow,water,fertilize and harvest the crops. so machines are useful in such conditions. they can take care of hundreds of hectares of land easily. they can sow the seeds fast, get the soil fertilized, jets can sprinkle water to a huge farm without difficulty, aeroplanes help in sprinkling pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals. harvesters can harvest vast amounts of crops in minutes.
thus the replacement of machines by human/manual labour is reasonable.
