Most of the pteridophytes show haplo-diplontic life cycle in which a dominant, independent, photosynthetic, vascular plant body represented by diploid spore alternates with multicellular, saprophytic/autotrophic, independent haploid gametophyte stage which is short lived.

In haplo-diplontic life cycle, diploid sporophyte produces spores by meiosis which germinate to produce a haploid gametophyte (asexual reproduction), and haploid gametophyte produces gametes without meiosis which fuse to produce diploid zygote, which later gives rise to diploid sporophyte (sexual reproduction).
