Land acquisition in India denotes the process by which the state or the union govt. in India buys private land for industrialisation, urbanisation, or development of infrastructural facilities of the private land (mostly farmers’ land), and offers compensation to the impacted land owners along with their rehabilitation and resettlement. The magnitudes of land acquisition in India are multifarious. Land acquisition from farmers has resulted in landlessness, joblessness, marginalisation, increased mortality and morbidity, food insecurity, loss of access to common property resources, social disarticulation, and homelessness.
EXPLANATION:
- Land acquisition reduced the status of brilliant farmers as temporary unskilled landless labourers. Farmers were forced to support their big families with a smaller agriculture lands. This decreased income and the standard of living the affected families. The key cause of ruin was the poor designing and execution of the policies related to rehabilitation and resettlement.
- Loss of agriculture land had an instant adverse effect on employment prospects which were dependent on farming associated activities. Reduction in land holdings and farmers’ economic status resulted in shortage of demand for farm labourers and narrowing of labour wages subsequently intensifying the alienation between landless labourers and land owning farmers. The rate of compensation for land was nearly half the market rate. Farmers were not able to buy the equal size of land post resettlement.
- Most of the resettlement sites had lack of basic amenities such as access to proper roads, market, drainage, clean water supply, schools for children, clean water supply, and so on. The compensation too is low and does not resolve problems. The administrative processes for monetary recompense to farmers made them vulnerable with regard to the amount and the delay of payment. Majority of the households used to spend major part of their compensation money on domestic use, marriages, house repairs, etc.
