Answer:
- The Clergy of France was one of the most corrupt and spoilt Clergies in Europe
- They profited off their unjust birth rights and exemptions from taxes by making the peasants pay heavy taxes for them know as 'Tieth"
- One of the uses of these taxes were to build magnificent and large churches which were un-needed given the financial condition of the third estate
- The church also became a symbol of Anti-Revolutionary sentiments as they sympathized with the King and his Family
- The famous French writer Jean-Paul Marat famously declared the church to be "The Enemies of The Revolution"
- The introduction of the new state-wide religion known as "The Cult Of Reason" became popular in France as they Replaced the Church
- Thus, when the reign of terror began, Maximilien Robespierre ordered the church properties to be seized from the priests and the clergy
- When no use could be found for these churches, they were converted into barracks and offices
