Answer: perpendicular and base will be 8 and 15.

Step-by-step explanation:

Using Pythagoras Theorem

We get,

x^2 +y^2 = 17^2 = 289

We have,

17+x+y=40 which gibes

x+y=23 or y=23-x ......eq (2)

Now on squaring

x^2 +y^2 +2xy = 529

we get,

2xy = 240

using eq (2) we get,

x(23-x)=120

23x-x^2=120 ........eq(3)

On solving eq(3), we get

x=8 and y=15
