It means that the number has been repeated and thus the symbol represents the number multiplied by the number of times it has been repeated. Eg. XX=10×2=20 In this case X value represents 10.

In Roman numerals repetition of a symbol means that certain word has been repeated. That's means you have to multiplied the number with each other in order to know the whole correct numbers or simply number is being multiplied . Like in roman X means 10 and if XX is there that means 10*10= 20 . Similarly XXX means 10*3 or 10*10*10 = 30 So the XX means 20 and XXX means 30 .
