solution:

let the ratio of boys to girls be 5x and 8x
5x + 8x = 6422
13x       = 6422
x           =6422/13 = 494

 total no of girls = 5x = 2470
total no of boys = 8x =3952

1/5 of girls= 2470/5 = 494    
1/8 of boys= 3952/8 = 494
students taking part in the camp= 494+494 =988

fraction of total strength took part in camp = 988/6422
                                                                   = 2/13
