The reaction of water and a concentrated acid is highly exothermic and if done incorrectly could cause spillage and burns. Water is less dense and more volatile than an acid. If added on top of the acid it just comes to the top of the container and spills.
Henceforth when working with water and an acid,
- First make an ice bath
- Place container with water only in the ice bath
- Slowly add the acid into the container while stirring
This ensures that the acid settles at the bottom of container and thus eliminate spillage.
