They we're suffocated because of excessive presence of carbon dioxide in room. But, when they opened window, they managed to take out the oxygen.

since,the windows were closed and simultaneously the wood were burnt thence,the smoke emitted by the fire rarely get any space to go out therefore the smoke remains in the closed room causing suffocation due to presnce of carbon dioxide in smoke.
