his savings were for himself he did not want to give his savings to any one including his friend bassanio

Antonio was a rich and worthy merchant in Venice. His ventures spread all over the world, but even though Antonio borrows money from Shylock as his ships which had flown to tripolis with rich cargo had wrecked at Goodwins sad, a dangerous flat and fatal place. As Antonio currently was in need of money, he for his sake of his best friend Bassanio borrowed money from Shylock as Bassanio was in need of money to go to Belmont to woo Portia
